The Senior Caucus hosts a book club monthly on the third Monday at 11:00a, using Zoom technology. Everyone is invited to join the discussion.

The next meeting isĀ January 20, when we will discussĀ Necessary Trouble: Growing Up at Midcentury by Drew Gilpin Faust.

Retired Harvard president and professor of history Drew Gilpin recounts the rapid changes of the post-WWII years through the upheavals of 1968. She grew up in conservative, segregated Virginia, expected to adopt a willful blindness to the inequities of race and the constraints of gender, accepting both female subordination and racial hierarchy. These proved intolerable and galvanizing, and she found resistance was necessary for her survival. During the 1960s, her love of learning and active engagement in civil rights, student, and antiwar movements led her to become a historian of the very conflicts that shaped the world in which she grew up and with which we grapple today.

The December meeting is cancelled.

We focus on books of a political, historical, or scientific nature that pertain to understanding our current political climate. The authors are recognized experts in their fields (politics, journalism, history, science). Occasionally we read a book of fiction.
